“Motown: The Musical” has come to Los Angeles after its nearly two year-run on Broadway concluded. The Pantages Theatre in Hollywood is its new home for a limited six-week run that ends June 7.

Based on Berry Gordy’s 1994 autobiography To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown, the musical was born. “Motown” is in the thick of its’ short run, and here are five reason why you must grab a ticket while you still can.

Historical: The show lets the audience in from the beginning stages of Motown and what inspired Gordy to be great. You not only get to see the relationships he cultivated with so many musical legends, but their friendships. Your learn that Smokey Robinson has been with Gordy from the start; the ins and outs of the partnership and love affair he shared with Diana Ross; and that Suzanne de Passe brought five young guys named the Jackson 5 to his doorstep!

Music: When the curtain opens, immediately you are hit with a booming musical sound. A true sing-off between the Temptations and the Four Tops has you instantly singing along. The musical catalog of Motown is astonishing, and this show brings you hit after hit. There are so many artists like Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Jackson 5, Rick James, Smokey Robinson, the Four Tops, the Temptations and the list goes on and on. You sing along to each remarkable artist.

Costumes: The audience is transported back to a different time and place. Each era goes by, and the hair either gets bigger, sleeker or curlier to go with flamboyant outfits or an understated ensemble. You see the glitz and the glam of the ‘60s that is later juxtaposed against the afros and darker colors of the ’70s. Although Rick James always remained flamboyant regardless of the decade!

Performances: These actors have some pretty big shoes to fill being Berry Gordy, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson, but they deliver. Seeing the small nuances that made Ross great coming through the actress makes you appreciate the hard work that went into mastering this musical.

Fun: Overall, the show simply put, is fun. Grab a friend, family member or date, and go out and enjoy this show. The music will have you dancing in your seat and feeling like you are actually able to see so many of these artists giving a real concert.

Not too many shows come along that are pure joy, but when one does like “Motown: The Musical,” run out and get your tickets!
